WINE CASE DEAL OF THE MONTH
ITAILIAN RED & WHITE SELECTION 6 BOTTLES
This classic Italian red and white selection worked excellent for a dinner party that I held with friends and family recently. I chose this mixed box selection as Italian wines are becoming more popular, and I find Italian wines are some of the best wines in the world and are excellent examples of Old-World wines.
We started the night with Canaletto Pinot Grigio, this wine was refreshing and is the perfect example of the Italian grape. On the palate it had fresh fruit notes of green apple, pear and finished off with a moderate acidic flavour of citrus fruit.
When we had our appetizers, we had the Amodo Pecorino this wine is sweet with notes of melon with well round acidic citrus flavours. Pecorinos has to be one of my favourite white wines it reminds me of a sweet German Reisling.
For starters we had monk fish I opened Villalta Soave for this course, this wine has a slightly nutty and mineral taste to it with soft and well-rounded acidity that worked as a delight to pair well with monk fish.
The Main dish that we had was lasagne which I paired with Canaletto Montepulciano D Abruzzo this is a rich red wine with layers of damson and morello cherry that really complemented the lasagne. I also used the wine in the cooking of the lasagne which worked to soften the acidity of marinara sauce.
We had Affogato which is a classic Italian dessert of gelato ice cream and a shot of coffee, we had the Villalta Valpolicella Ripasso with cheese board that followed. This valpolicella has excellent aromas of dark chocolate and roasted nuts it is an excellent partner to full flavoured mature cheeses.
To finish the night we had Virtuoso Primitivo Di Manduria I really love Primitivo’s and this one is excellent, it is a medium bodied with deep dark hue. This wine has soft tannins with sweet cherry notes, the wine is complex and sophisticated thanks to the aging in oak casks. This wine pairs well with game and aged chesses. Or if you’re like me you can enjoy this wine on its own for the perfect end of night wine.
ALCOHOL FREE OF THE MONTH
Nozeco Rose is a great example of an alcohol-free option. This wine was a delight to have, on the nose it has intense fruity notes dominated by white strawberry. The palate surprised me as there was tropical fruit, apple and elderflower notes upon first taste which led to zesty citrus flavours. this wine is well balanced with good structure and finish. I used also used this sparkling wine to make alcohol free Singapore Slings that went down a treat.
WINE OF THE MONTH
EDONE CUVEE DE MARIA
When drinking sparkling I usually go for a prosecco or a crémant but not anymore, I got a bottle of Edone Cuvee De Maria, and wow this sparkling wine is a good one. The grape used is Chardonnay and this would have to be one of my favourite grapes as its versatile. On the nose it is fresh and fruity notes, on the palate it has apple, pear, oak and yeast notes. The wine develops into citrus flavours and finishes with a long-lasting tropical flavour with its subtle micro-bubbles. I used this this Edone to make the sauce for mussels it was great the flavour complemented the mussels; I will definitely be having this combination again.
BEER OF THE MONTH
HEANEY DOUBLE PALE ALE
I often cook Smokey BBQ dishes which I love, I recently made a slow roasted Brisket burgers for friends. We all like to try new craft beers with our BBQ meals, it was my time to select the beer. I chose a local beer which is Heaney I had tried their pale ale before and was impressed. This time I got Heaney Double Pale Ale this worked even better than I thought with the brisket. The juicy citrus aromas helped cut through the Smokey flavours of the brisket and the ale finished with subtle grapefruit bitterness.
